Introduction

Aside from having to complete my requirements for ENGLCOM-RVLC, I made this portfolio in order to apply the lessons and skills that I learned about reading, language, grammar, and mechanics. In addition to this, I will also be able to see if I was successful in achieving my goals for grammar and reading and this portfolio will give me the chance to share my insights, realizations, or experiences in RVLC. Having said these, keeping a language portfolio is significant to me because it will somehow provide me a summary of all the things that I learned in ENGLCOM-RVLC and it will help me keep track of my progress in the course as well.

My ENGLCOM-RVLC portfolio aims to evaluate and provide a summary of my strengths and weaknesses, and the skills and lessons that I learned about reading and grammar. My portfolio also aims to give a gist of the fun and interesting experience that I had in my ENGLCOM-RVLC course.

To my friends, block mates, to everyone else who will be reading this portfolio, and of course, to my very awesome professor, Mr. Kim Bryan Lira, I would like to express my deepest gratitude for the time and effort that you will be using in reading my portfolio. Enjoy!

Reflection

Grammar is “the study of the classes of words, their inflections, and their functions and relations in the sentence” (Merriam-Webster, 2012). Grammar is really important especially when it comes to communication. Without grammar, language and communication will turn into complete bedlam. Hence, having my grammar and reading course is very significant to me because it gives me a chance to improve my grammar skills and to learn how to value grammar.

I always enjoy my ENGLCOM-RVLC classes because I really like the way my professor, Sir Lira, discusses. He does his best to make our class discussions fun and interactive. Even for boring lessons, Sir Lira still tries to teach those lessons without getting the class bored. With his interactive way of teaching, I was able to practice my grammar skills because he provides me and my block mates a chance to talk during discussions and to say and ask anything about the lessons that he discusses.

Through my grammar and reading course, I realized how important grammar is and how it could be very useful to me. I am very thankful to have this course because I really learned a lot, particularly about grammar. I was able to learn how to correct certain grammatical errors that I used to constantly make. I hope that other students who take or will be taking up this course will also have the fun and interesting experience that I had.

Language Video Link & Write-Up

Language Video

For the completion of this video, I contributed 7 pictures with grammatical errors. I was also the one who edited most of the pictures for the video. I chose which song to put on the video as well. I had fun making this language video even though I had to saty up late with my group mates just to finish it. J

Realizations

One of the goals that I have set for my grammar and reading course is to learn new lessons and to develop the skills that I possess as well as new ones that I can maximize when it comes to grammar and reading. Another is to be able to apply the lessons and skills that I have learned from this course in fun and interesting ways such as, through sharing my personal insights in class discussions and making a creative project about grammar or reading. Lastly, is to be able to assess and see the progress and development that I have made throughout the entire semester. Fortunately, I was able to achieve all the goals that I have mentioned above. So far, I have learned a lot of lessons and developed skills that I can surely use in different aspects which involve grammar and reading. I was also able to apply the lessons that I have learned from grammar and reading in many ways. By making this portfolio itself, I am able to see the progress and development that I have made in RVLC.

The accomplishments that I have made in this class which I am most proud of is learning new lessons and reviewing the lessons that I am familiar with but somehow I have already forgotten about such as the subject-verb agreement. I consider these as the accomplishments that I am most proud of because I know that the lessons that I learned would be of great of help to me, especially in the future. For instance, I can use the lessons and skills that I learned about pragmatics in writing essays, constructing sentences, or simply in conversing with other people.

I think that I still need to improve my reading skills because I tend to read really slow at times. There are also instances wherein I do not understand or completely forget everything that I just read. For that reason, I will practice reading through skimming and scanning so that I will get used to reading fast and so that I can eventually learn to take up and comprehend the things that I read.

While I was in the process of completing this portfolio, one of the things that I learned about grammar, mechanics, word choice, and reading is that I should remember to use correct grammar and be very particular with my choice of words because it will have a huge impact on the construction of my sentences. I also learned how to apply different transitional devices and how to avoid common language errors such as fragments.

Completing this portfolio was not that difficult for me; in fact, it was actually quite fun because I was able to express my ideas and experiences in my grammar and reading course. Maybe choosing words is one of the difficulties that I encountered as I was completing this portfolio because I wanted to attain coherence with my choice of words without being too wordy or without creating run-on sentences. It was also a bit difficult to construct grammatically and logically correct sentences because I have become a grammar nazi from my experience of making my language video with my group mates. I dealt with these difficulties by recalling and applying the lessons that I have learned about grammar and reading in this portfolio.

What I can say about the process of keeping a language portfolio is that it is very useful and it is fun and interesting to do as well. Although it may take some time and effort, I believe that keeping a language portfolio would be able to show how much a student has learned and how much he or she has developed. By creating this language portfolio, I was able to utilize most of the lessons that I have learned in grammar and reading.
